Biographical history
Dr. Jean Phyllis Black (1903-1992) was born in Duluth, Minnesota. She moved around a lot as a child, spending much of it in Europe prior to World War I. She earned a Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Library Science from the University of Washington. She studied for her doctorate in Rome. She was worked as a research librarian and ultimately became Portland State University's first librarian.

Black discusses his early life and education, studying in Rome, working in various research and academic libraries across the country, teaching library science, coming to Vanport, Oregon in 1946 to be a librarian at Vanport College, dealing with the aftermath of the 1948 flood, and the early history of the Portland State University library.
