Biographical history
Michael Robert Hogan was born in Oregon City, Oregon, in 1946. He grew up on a ranch in Myrtle Point, Oregon. In 1968, he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon, and in 1971, he earned a law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. While in D.C., he also worked as a Capitol police officer. In 1970, he and Christine Campbell were married; they later had three children. His first legal job was as a law clerk for Judge Robert C. Belloni. He was a lawyer with the firm that later became Miller & Nash in Portland for one year, then served as a federal magistrate judge, from 1973 to 1989, and a federal bankruptcy judge, from 1973 to 1980, for the District of Oregon in Medford. He became a judge on the U.S. District Court of Oregon in 1991, and served as chief judge from 1995 to 2002. He took senior status in 2011, and retired in 2012.

Session 5, Video 2. Hogan discusses his family background and early life, his education, and his career as a lawyer and judge in Oregon. He also discusses some of the cases he worked on, including bankruptcy cases, and his work on the Wayne Morse Federal Courthouse.
