Biographical history
John Phillip Meynink, nee Johannes Phillippus Meynink, was born in Oosthuisen, Netherlands, in 1899. In 1923, he immigrated to the United States, where he first settled in Hood River, Oregon. In 1939, he and Wanda Marie Rohrbough were married; they later had two children. He had a variety of careers over his lifetime including running an ice cream shop, becoming a candy peddler, owning several Texaco gas stations, and becoming an accountant at the end of his working life. He retired in 1972. During his retirement, he worked as a tour guide in downtown Portland. He died in 1995.

Tape 1, Side 1. This oral history interview with John P. Meynink was conducted by Jim Strassmaier at the Oregon Historical Society in Portland, Oregon, from August 17-24, 1990. The interview was conducted in two sessions. In the first interview session, conducted on August 17, 1990, Meynink discusses his family background and early life in the Netherlands in the early 20th century, including working on farms. He then talks about his reasons for immigrating to the United States in 1923. He also briefly discusses his compulsory service in the Dutch Army. He describes his journey across the Atlantic and adjusting to life in the U.S., including learning English as a second language. He talks about the various jobs he held in Oregon and Washington, other immigrant groups in the area, and his experience during the Depression. He also discusses his political beliefs.
