United Fund Fundraiser Campaign with Children

Five children stand on different steps of a staircase, each holding up a sign with one word written on it. Beginning at the top of the staircase, the signs read, "Thank you for helping us." The children smile and look up at the camera. The photograph is taken at an angle, looking down at the children. They are kindergartners who attend the Volunteers of America day nursery for working mothers. This is part of a fundraiser for the United Way. Unidentified girl in gondola of Explorer II high-altitude balloon

Photograph showing an unidentified girl looking out of the hatch of the Explorer II gondola. Army Air Corps Captains Albert Stevens and Orvil Anderson flew the Explorer II, a high-altitude balloon, to a record altitude over South Dakota on November 11, 1935. This photograph was probably taken in while the gondola was on display at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland in October 1936.
