Accident at Portland Drive-in

Maynard Moore being rescued from a platform after falling from a broken scaffold at the Portland Drive-in, at 9727 N.E. Union Avenue. Moore is in a litter, which is on top of a ladder. Several people are on a platform, which can be seen under the broken pieces of a scaffold. A sign above the group reads “Grand Re-Opening Friday, Many Improvements, Big Picture” (negative 1 of 5).

Photograph showing actress Blanche Sweet and Ella Tenney Jackson, wife of Oregon Journal publisher Philip L. Jackson, sitting in the garden at Jackson’s home in Riverwood, outside Portland. A similar photograph was published on Page 19 of the Oregon Journal on Wednesday, August 17, 1932. It had the following caption: “Miss Blanche Sweet (left) and Mrs. P. L. Jackson in the garden of the Jackson home in Riverwood, where Miss Sweet is a house guest during her Portland visit. She will open her engagement at the Paramount theatre Thursday.” The Journal also published an accompanying story, headlined “Favorite of Past Plans New Films.” See related image No. 371N6088. The photograph was taken in August 1932, when Sweet stayed with the Jacksons while she was in Portland to perform in “Sweet and Lovely” at the Paramount Theatre. A different photograph of Sweet and a story about her visit, headlined “Favorite of Past Plans New Films,” were published on Page 19 of the Oregon Journal on August 17, 1932. The woman on the right, Dorothy Ford of Portland, is wearing a coat and a fur stole and muffs. The photograph was taken in Portland on April 8, 1932, after Booth’s arrival in Portland. According to a story in the April 8 edition of the Oregon Journal, headlined “Movieland Trio Of Pretty Girls to Take Part in Ball,” Booth and two other actresses came to Portland to participate in the Eagles’ “Movie Ball,” a charity event. A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 5, Section 2, of the Oregon Journal on Sunday, March 29, 1936, under the headline “Pouring Third Floor Block at Ward’s.” The photograph had the following caption: “Building activity is at high gear on this $750,000 project at Montgomery Ward & Co. mail order and retail center at N. W. 27th avenue and Vaughn Street, as 150 men push the nine-story addition into the air.” The photograph accompanied a story headlined “Montgomery Ward Project On Schedule.” Image note: The text “Mont - Ward 3/26/36” is written on the negative and is faintly visible in the lower right corner of the image.

The owner of Joe's Bicycle and Repair Shop, Joseph Brown, is posed on the bike with someone seated on his shoulders. The photograph is signed "Sowell photo" on the bottom-left corner, indicating the photo may have been taken by Leo Simon, who operated Sowell Studio in 1925. Sowell Studio was a commercial photography studio located in Portland, Oregon.
