The headstone inscription notes "In memory of John Geisel, also his three sons John, Henry and Andrew, who were massacred by Indians Feb 22, 1856, aged 45, 9, 7, 5 yrs. Also wife and mother died Sept. 20, 1899, aged 75 years." A grave fence surrounds the site.

Now occupied by undertaking parlour. Fort established in 1811 by Astor. Captured by British in 1813." This inscription is referring to the site of the original Fort Astoria on Exchange Street, where a mortuary was occupying the building at the time this photograph was taken.
