Jiro Harada

Half-length portrait, taken outdoors, of a man with a mustache. He is wearing glasses, a suit, and a tie, and is standing with one hand in his pants pocket. The name “Jiro Harada” is written on the negative and is visible at the bottom of the image. Jiro Harada was commissioner of the Tokyo Imperial Household Museum in Japan (now the Tokyo National Museum) and was a guest professor at the University of Oregon in 1935 and 1936.

According to an August 10, 1930, Oregon Journal article about preparations for the first attempt, a hole was cut in the top of the plane’s fuselage to accommodate aerial refueling. She is wearing an aviator’s cap and goggles, a calf-length jacket, and a jumpsuit. On the side of the plane, just below the cockpit window, are the words “ ‘Queen of the Cascades.’ “ A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 7 of the Oregon Journal on Wednesday, April 25, 1928, under the headline “Flies Alone.” The photograph had the caption “Miss Faye Carter,” and accompanied a story titled “Girl Makes Her First ‘Solo Hop.’ “ The story reported that Carter, 22, a student at the Rankin School of Flying in Portland, had made her first solo flight on the morning of April 25 over Pearson Field in Vancouver, Washington.
