Transcription from back: “Charles Henry Hill. Pioneer of 1857. Photograph was taken about 1864. He was the carrier of the first issue of the Oregonian December 4th 1854 and was the first “printer’s devil” on this newspaper. He was employed as type-setter in the office of the Oregonian for many years. He married Miss Sarah Virginia Kline. During the Civil War he served as first Lieutenant of a company of volunteers.”

Lucinda Miller (Ford) Haley, born in 1840 in Missouri, pioneer of 1844 to Oregon. She settled in Polk County and married William Thompson Haley on July 22, 1858. She died in Santa Rosa, California, in 1867.

Halleck, Maj. Gen. Henry Wager

Major General Henry Wager Halleck, an expert in military studies, known as "Old Brains." He helped in California's admission as a state, and was a lawyer and land developer. He served as General-in-Chief of all Union armies during the Civil War.
