A portrait of Lieutenant Colonel John M. Drake in uniform. Drake was a Union Army officer with the 1st Oregon Cavalry and the 1st Oregon Infantry. The photograph is a hand-tinted early 20th century copy of a photograph from the 1860s. It is a full-figure portrait of Drake standing beside a white railing. He holds a cane in one hand and his hat in the other hand. The photograph is cased in a desktop frame with gold matting. A typed note on the back for the frame reads, "Lt. Col. John M. Drake. Presented by Mrs. Gertrude Drake Graves, Los Gatos, Calif. Apr. 8, '48."

A cartes-de-visite photograph of an unidentified man in a Civil War uniform. He stands with his left hand tucked into the front of his jacket and looks directly at the camera. Legacy records indicate that he is associated with the Taylor family. The photograph has been cut down to fit within a wood and leather case. A pencil note on the the interior of the case back was documented during conservation work on the item. It reads, "Dear George [illegible]."

There is a darkened space immediately below the photograph were a now missing photograph was once attached.

A cartes-de-visite portrait of Lorenzo Lorain wearing a military uniform. The handwritten caption on the front of the page reads, "Lt. Lorenzo Lorain. Lieut. Lorenzo Lorain, Later Colonel [crossed out] Major, U. S. Artillery." The photograph is glued to the inner cover of an album of Lorain's photography (OHS Album 101).

A bound album of photographs believed to be taken and collected by Lorenzo Lorain while stationed in Oregon between 1857 and 1860. The photographs depict military structures and Native American structures at Fort Umpqua and the Coast Reservation in Douglas County, Oregon Territory. Also included are portraits of military personnel and their families stationed at Fort Umpqua, and portraits of Native American people from southwestern Oregon held near Fort Umpqua on the southern portion of the Coast Reservation.
Note: only pages with content are included in this digitized version of this album, blank pages are omitted. One photograph potentially depicting Native American burial practices is also excluded from the digital version of this album.

Moved to Seattle, served in United States Navy for 37 years retired as chief torpedo man."

Handwritten note on the sleeve reads, "Tentative ID: Center Back: Ex-Col. Reuben F. Maury, 1st Oregon Cavalry, at right, in uniform Lt. D. C. Underwood & Lt. F. B. White." [These 3 men are also pictured in an article titled, "The First Oregon Cavalry and the Oregon Central Military Road Survey of 1865," published in the Oregon Historical Quarterly (Vol. 60, No. 1, p. 94).]

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of 3 men wearing Army uniforms. Their body language is casual. The men on the left and right are seated with their legs crossed and one arm resting on the backs of their chairs. The man in the middle stands with his hands in his pockets. A partial typed note enclosed with the image indicates that the man on the left is Captain Norman Chamberlin. Legacy collection records indicate he was with the 62nd Ohio Infantry and that all 3 men probably served during the Civil War. Records also indicate that the man on the left is a junior officer with the Union Army, company grade; the man on the right is a junior officer, probably lieutenant, company grade; the man in the middle is likely a sergeant major, perhaps a quartermaster. Case is a union case made of thermoplastic, featuring a motif of a statue of George Washington.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a bearded soldier in military uniform, mounted on a horse. The horse faces left and the soldier turns his head to look at the camera. His rifle is attached to the saddle. They are in front of a stone wall. Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "Charles S. Grover. Presented by Mrs. Florence G. Sage, Rec. No. 473." Legacy collection records indicate that inscriptions in the back of the case and on the verso of the tintype read, "94658 Shaffer." Case is made of wood. The cover of the case is missing and has been replaced with archival board.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a seated young man wearing a military uniform from the Civil War. He holds a gun across his chest and looks at the camera. Typed note on envelope reads, "Charles James Randle. Enlisted in 27th Illinois Infantry on 14 July 1861. Wounded 1862 but returned to complete his enlistment period. The Minie ball remained with him and was removed from his throat about 1891 - after 29 years. Lived also in Oregon and Washington and is buried in Pullman." Second note reads, "From Randle Collection / Mrs. Randle / Shawnee Mission, Kansas 66205." Case is made of wood and leather.

It read, "Reuben F. Maury." Note is no longer enclosed with image. Maury came to Oregon as a pioneer in 1852 and served as a colonel in the Oregon Cavalry during the Civil War. Case is made of wood and pressed paper. Case cover was replaced with archival board during conservation.

Came to Oregon in 1858. Joined Company D First oregon Cavalry in 1861 and served four years. Was married Nov. 1865 to Angeline Robb dau. of James R. and Elizabeth (Parrish) Robb. Died Portland Ore - Dec. 1913." Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "October 25 1944, Presented by Miss Ruth Drake, 1505 SW 14th Ave, City." Case is made of velvet and wood.

George Aleman serves in the U.S. Marines and Florentino Aleman serves in the Air Force. This image was published in the Valley Migrant League's Opportunity News on July 22, 1966.

Joe Rodriguez Jr., soldier in the U.S. Army, stands shirtless in Long Binh, Vietnam. He is a former migrant laborer who traveled from Texas to Oregon every year for work before he joined the Army. This image was published in the Valley Migrant League's Opportunity News on May 26, 1967, accompanying a letter he wrote to the newspaper, thanking them for their work.

Photograph showing people dining at long tables during an outdoor luncheon honoring officers of the frigate USS Constitution on August 9, 1933. The luncheon was held at Laurelhurst Park in Portland. The Constitution and crew visited Portland from August 2 to August 22, 1933, as part of a national tour. A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 3 of the Oregon journal on August 9, 1933, under the headline “Dinner in Park Fetes ‘Old Ironsides.’ ” The photograph had the following caption: “Civic luncheon, preceding dedication of marker to veteran of Constitution, is held under towering firs in Laurelhurst park. At the head table were Lieutenant Commander Henry Hartley and Lieutenants D. W. Lyon and W. J. Dean and Dan E Gould, general chairman of program. Descendants of heroic figures of Constitution’s history were introduced.” The photograph accompanied the continuation of a front-page story about the luncheon. See related image Nos. 371N3723, also taken at the luncheon, and 371N3725, which may depict the marker dedication referred to in the caption for this photograph.
