Oregon School for the Deaf photographs

Collection consists of photographs related to the Oregon School for the Deaf in Salem, Oregon. The photographs date from about 1870 to 1989. Included in the collection are photographs showing the outside of the school buildings and campus grounds; the inside of classrooms, dorms, dining areas, and other spaces; the farmland which belonged to the school and was worked by students; and exhibits in the Oregon School for the Deaf Heritage Museum. Other images include sports team photographs, especially of boys and girls basketball teams from 1907 to 1947; students participating in activities such as club meetings, playing in the snow, going to dances, and swimming; school and class photos of students and staff; students in their classes, including general education, printing, sewing, cooking, woodworking, and home economics. The collection also includes portraits of individuals who were important to the school, including Mark Hamstreet, William S. Smith, and Edward and Hilda Tillinghast, as well as a photograph of attendees at the first biennial meeting of the Oregon Association of the Deaf. Most of these photographs are copies from originals held by the Oregon School for the Deaf Heritage Museum. Many photographs are mounted on photo mats and almost all include explanatory notes provided by Mark Hamstreet, the first historian and curator of the Oregon School for the Deaf Heritage Museum.

Several students sit at desks with books and slates. Four students practice speaking while standing at the front of the room with their teacher. They are holding their hands to their throats to feel the vibrations of their speech. Primary Classroom, Oregon School for the Deaf, 1908-1909

The students sit at tables set up in a rectangle and are turned to face the camera. The photograph is mounted on a black mat and a note under the photograph reads "OSD primary classroom - 1908-09 - Turner." Faded notes on the back of the photograph identify two of the students as William and Samuel Toll. It reads: "William Toll end of 2nd row. 3rd from left 1st row Sam Toll (bro. to Wm.)" Another note on the back reads: "Oregon School for Deaf 1908-09"

Home Economics Class, Oregon School for the Deaf, 1916

A large counter-height table is in the center of the room with a low table to the left and a stove to the right. The girls are mixing ingredients into bowls and one is stirring something on the stove. The photograph is mounted on a black mat. Sewing Class, Oregon School for the Deaf, 1900-1901

A black and white photograph of a sewing class at the Oregon School for the Deaf on Turner Road. About a dozen students sit in chairs with hand sewing, turned to face the camera. One woman sits at a treadle sewing machine and another stands behind the seated girls. A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads: "1900-1901 OSSD sewing class Mrs. Wentz, Teacher Turner Rd". Another note reads: "printed from original engraving - 1901". OSSD stands for Oregon State School for the Deaf, the name of the school from 1913-1989.

Printing Office, Oregon School for the Deaf, 1916

A black and white photograph of the Printing Office of the Oregon School for the Deaf on Locust Street in 1916. Several boys are working at machines and in other locations in the room. One student is labeled as "Edwin". A note written on the back of the photograph reads: "Printing Office - Salem Deaf School - 1916 T. A. Lindstrom, deaf teacher" The printing class was taught by Thure Lindstrom and was located on the 2nd floor of the Steam Plant Building at this time.

A white picket fence runs across the foreground. Construction of the building was completed in 1895 and the school was located there from 1895-1910. A note written on back of photograph reads: "Oregon School for Deaf Mutes 1894-95 at Turner Road. This old picture printed in 1895 from engraving process (1895 Biennial report for OSD)". Oregon School for Deaf Mutes was the name of the school from 1880-1913.

Hospital Building, Oregon School for the Deaf, 1911-1914

A sepia-toned photograph of the hospital building of the Oregon School for the Deaf at its Locust Street location. The building is a two-story residential building with a large pillared front porch. Two people, a man and a woman, stand in front of the building. The Hospital Building was used to quarantine sick students to prevent the spread of disease. It was later converted into the Teacher's Cottage for unmarried female teachers. A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads: "Hospital Building for isolating cases of contagious or infectious disease. 1911-1914."
