Photograph of a photograph. The original picture shows the three-masted British sailing ship Glenesslin listing in the waters at the base of Neahkahnie Mountain on the Oregon coast, where the ship struck rocks and wrecked in October 1913. The number 149 is written on the negative. The text “#17” had also been written on the negative and was crossed out. A cropped version of this photograph was one of three that were published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on October 4, 1913, under the headline “British Ship Glenesslin Wrecked at Base of Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain.” The photographs accompanied a story with the headline “Glenesslin Will Be Sold at Auction if Plans Are Matured.”

U.S.S. Cruiser Toledo arriving in Portland

People lean over a seawall on the Willamette River, as the U.S.S. Toledo arrives for a visit in Portland. Several sailors can be seen waving from the desk of the ship. A photograph from this series was published in the Oregon Journal on Thursday, June 10, 1954 (negative 6 of 7).

Trial run of S.S. Mariposa

Two men, identified as H. Haines and Robert Linville at the boiler controls in the engine room of the S.S. Mariposa during boiler tests in its trial run. The luxury ship was reconstructed at Willamette Iron and Steel Co. This photograph was published in the September 30, 1956 issue of the Oregon Journal (negative 8 of 9).

Photograph of freight ship W.H. Peabody being navigated through the Morrison Bridge by the sternwheeler Portland piloted by O.G. Graham, and tugboats Manzanillo, James W. and Bear. The Peabody was loaded with 9800 tons of scrap iron bound for Japan. This photograph was published in the November 9, 1956 issue of the Oregon Journal (negative 2 of 3).

A dog uses a rope to assist the docking of a Standard Oil tanker at a Portland dock. It appears to be grabbing a rope with its mouth, coming from the edge of the dock at the right side of the frame, where the oil tanker can be seen. A small building with a ramp has been built on the dock (negative 5 of 6).
