A man stands on top of a large boulder holding a hatchet and looking off into the distance. A small tree grows out of the boulder in front of him and a larger tree is seen behind him. Accompanying description reads, "A fir tree 8' in diameter is growing atop a huge boulder that is fully 20 feet in diameter and extends at least ten feet above the ground, with but a few inches of ? vegetation serving for soil, the tree clings tight by sending its roots down in crevices in the rock and moisture is drawn from the porous rock ? cava formation near Silverton, Oregon.
