Empire Builder Train on the Columbia River, Washington

The 12-car streamliner, drawn by a two-unit diesel locomotive, has a 45-hour schedule for the 2,211-mile run between Chicago and Seattle. SP&S Diesel Electric Locomotive on Oregon Electric Railway

Typed note on the back of the print reads, "New SP&S Road Freight Diesel Electric Locomotive Placed in Service Oregon Electric Railway between Portland and Eugene. Each unit of the new locomotive weighs 230,000 pounds fully loaded, is 51 feet, 6 inches long between coupling knuckles and has a wheel base of 36 feet, 6 inches. It stands 14 feet, 9 inches high. It is equipped with two four-wheel trucks and four electric motors geared to the driving axles. The weight per driving axle is 57,500 pounds. The wheels are 40 inches in diameter. It carries 1200 gallons of fuel oil and 200 gallons of lubricating oil. The new 115 ton, 1500 horsepower units can be operated in multiples to deliver, 1500, 3000, or 4500 horsepower, depending upon the power desired for a given run."
