That month, Rankin and his brothers, Tex Rankin and Dud Rankin, flew the On-to-Oregon in four attempts, all unsuccessful, to set an endurance flying record. According to an August 10, 1930, Oregon Journal article about preparations for the first attempt, a hole was cut in the top of the plane’s fuselage to accommodate aerial refueling.
