He is probably standing outside the Journal Building (now known as the Jackson Tower) in Portland. A mark that may be the number 1 is written on the negative and is visible in the lower left corner of the image.

On the front of the cake are the words “Our Third Anniversary.” A cropped version of this photograph and a short story were published on Page 6 of the Oregon Journal on Sunday, November 6, 1932, under the headline “Market to Have Birthday.” The photograph had the following caption: “Committeemen representing the Grand Central Public market who will direct the third anniversary birthday party at the market on November 9, inspect the huge birthday cake. From left—James Rogers, Charles Gates, Herman Vielmetti, Joe Kappel, Fred Koenig, who made the cake; R. P. Lewis, J. H. Sroufe, general manager of the market, and George Bakke.”

A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 7 of the Oregon Journal on Friday, December 8, 1933, under the headline “Prepare ‘Hot Time’ in Chinatown.” The photograph had the following caption: “Leaders and regalia which will head a parade Sunday through Chinatown by Suey Sing tongmen celebrating their establishment in new headquarters at 510 Southwest 2d avenue. The man-footed lion, which will dance through the streets, is pictured in the foreground and is surrounded by the banners and other paraphernalia which will flank it during the parade.” The photograph accompanied a story about the upcoming celebration, headlined “Local Chinese to Celebrate in Big Parade.”

A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 1 of the Oregon Journal on Tuesday, September 24, 1929, under the headline “Left Behind.” The photograph had the following caption: “Commander George O. Noville, who went to the North Pole and across the Atlantic with Commander [Richard E.] Byrd, was among the absent when his chief sailed for the Antarctic. Now he’s marking time until the expedition returns. Coming here by plane Monday, he will be one of the principal speakers at the All-Portland dinner Wednesday night.” The photograph accompanied an article about Noville and his visit to Portland, headlined “Noted Flier Sad Away From Byrd.”
