A cartes-de-visite photograph of an unidentified man in a Civil War uniform. He stands with his left hand tucked into the front of his jacket and looks directly at the camera. Legacy records indicate that he is associated with the Taylor family. The photograph has been cut down to fit within a wood and leather case. A pencil note on the the interior of the case back was documented during conservation work on the item. It reads, "Dear George [illegible]."

[These 3 men are also pictured in an article titled, "The First Oregon Cavalry and the Oregon Central Military Road Survey of 1865," published in the Oregon Historical Quarterly (Vol. 60, No. 1, p. 94).]

Unidentified young girl holds flag for President Lincoln’s death

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a somber girl wearing a plaid dress and holding a Union flag tied with a black ribbon. The flag has been hand-colored. The date, "4.17.1865" is handwritten into the velvet lining of the case. This was likely taken as a memorial for President Abraham Lincoln, 2 days after his assassination. Legacy collection records contain a note reading, "Proprietary 3 cent stamp with hand cancelation John Julius Spencer." Case is made of wood and leather with embossed paper.

Came to Oregon in 1858. Joined Company D First oregon Cavalry in 1861 and served four years. Was married Nov. 1865 to Angeline Robb dau. of James R. and Elizabeth (Parrish) Robb. Died Portland Ore - Dec. 1913." Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "October 25 1944, Presented by Miss Ruth Drake, 1505 SW 14th Ave, City." Case is made of velvet and wood.

A tintype portrait of a man tentatively identified as D. W. or J. W. Price. He wears a wool coat that is fully buttoned and has a full beard. The buttons on the jacket are hand-tinted gold. Legacy collection records indicate that this time may have been part of the Roddy M. Daggett collection.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a seated young man wearing a military uniform from the Civil War. He holds a gun across his chest and looks at the camera. Typed note on envelope reads, "Charles James Randle. Enlisted in 27th Illinois Infantry on 14 July 1861. Wounded 1862 but returned to complete his enlistment period. The Minie ball remained with him and was removed from his throat about 1891 - after 29 years. Lived also in Oregon and Washington and is buried in Pullman." Second note reads, "From Randle Collection / Mrs. Randle / Shawnee Mission, Kansas 66205." Case is made of wood and leather.

The men on the left and right are seated with their legs crossed and one arm resting on the backs of their chairs. The man in the middle stands with his hands in his pockets. A partial typed note enclosed with the image indicates that the man on the left is Captain Norman Chamberlin. Legacy collection records indicate he was with the 62nd Ohio Infantry and that all 3 men probably served during the Civil War. Records also indicate that the man on the left is a junior officer with the Union Army, company grade; the man on the right is a junior officer, probably lieutenant, company grade; the man in the middle is likely a sergeant major, perhaps a quartermaster. Case is a union case made of thermoplastic, featuring a motif of a statue of George Washington.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of 2 men and 2 women on a cliff in front of Niagara Falls. The 2 women are seated in the middle while the 2 men stand on either side of them. Handwritten note on the envelope reads, "Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Atkinson at Niagra (sic) Falls in 1865." A second, typed note reads, "Atkinson went East for the first time in the 1850's, but Mrs. Atkinson did not go with him. They both went East in 1865; from NY to Joliet, Ill, and back to NY via Dartmouth College, in New Hampshire. Probably visited Niagara Falls on this trip. So 1865 seems to be the right date for this photo." [Collection records do not indicate which couple are the Atkinsons. The second couple is unidentified.] Case is missing and has been replaced with archival board.

A teen boy stands behind them, wearing a hat and smoking a long pipe. Legacy collection records indicate they are named Joseph Charles, Polly and Jennie, and that they are the children of Ben Holladay and Noltey Ann (Calvert) Holladay. Records also indicate this was taken circa 1867. The same children are pictured in OrgLot1414_0246S077.
