Platt Building, Park and Washington, Portland

Photograph showing the exterior of the six-story Platt Building at Park and Washington streets (now Southwest Park Avenue and Southwest Washington Street) in Portland. The building is now known as the Park-Washington Building. A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 3 of the Development Section in the Oregon Journal Year’s End Number on Friday, December 26, 1913. The image was among a full page of photographs showing office buildings constructed in Portland in 1913. The photographs were published under the headline “Eleven Business Blocks Constructed During Year.” According to information on the page, the Platt Building was constructed at a cost of $100,000. Image note: The number 143 is written on the negative and is faintly visible in the lower right corner of the image. The number 133 was also written on the negative, then crossed out.

Pinned earwig

Photograph showing an earwig pinned to a flat surface. A cropped version of this photograph was one of five that were published on Page 3, Section 2, of the Oregon Journal on Sunday, August 15, 1920. The photographs accompanied a story about earwigs proliferating in the Walnut Park area of north Portland. The photographs were published under the headline “Invading Earwig Entomologist’s Game.” They had the following caption: “Journal photographer finds interesting pictures of insects that are overrunning lawns and gardens of Walnut Park district.” This photograph had the additional caption information: “Magnified specimen of bug showing ‘horns’ on tail portion and long feelers on head.” See related image Nos. 376G0318, 376G0320, 376G0321, and 376G0322.

The picture on the left, of Roy DeAutremont, is a head and shoulders portrait of a young man facing front and wearing a hat, overcoat, collared shirt, and tie. The picture on the right, of Ray DeAutremont, is a three-quarters portrait of a young man standing next to a tree. He is wearing a hat and suit. Cropped versions of the photographs were published together on the front page of the Oregon Journal on October 22, 1923, under the headline “Sought as S. P. Suspects.” The photographs had the following caption: “De Autremont twins, Ray (above) and Roy, two of three brothers, whom U. S. government and Southern Pacific operatives are trying to capture on suspicion they took part in the Siskiyou tunnel holdup.” The photographs accompanied a story with the headline “S. P. Holdup Is Laid to 3 Brothers” and the subhead “Roy, Ray, and Hugh DeAutremont, former residents of Eugene, Aided by Fourth Man, Sought as Bandit Murderers.” The story, datelined Ashland, Oregon, reported the following: “Three brothers and a fourth man were named late Sunday by Dan O’Connell, chief special agent of the Southern Pacific, who is directing the manhunt, as the men suspected of dynamiting Southern Pacific train No. 13 in tunnel 13, 17 miles south of Ashland, on October 11, resulting in the death of four Southern Pacific trainmen.”
