Meier and Marie Dawson, queen of the 1933 Winter Sports Carnival, on January 22, 1933, at the foot of the Multorpor ski-jumping hill near Government Camp, Oregon. This photograph was one of five, including image Nos. 374N0490 and 374N0495, that were published on Page 1 of the Oregon Journal on January 23, 1933. The photographs were published under the headline “Some Views from the Court of the Queen of Snows.” This photograph had the caption: “Governor Meier is crowning Queen Marie.” The photographs accompanied a story, headlined “Winter Sports Events Viewed by Thousands.” Also see image No. 374N0554. Crowd watching Ray Woods perform dive off Burnside Bridge

A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 21 of the Oregon Journal on Friday, September 7, 1934, under the headline “Try This One Before Breakfast.” The photograph had the following caption: “To Ray Woods of St. Louis, it’s just like eating corn flakes and cream. Here he is, just going into his back jacknife [sic] off the Burnside bridge Thursday afternoon as hundreds of curious Portlanders looked on. It was better than 80 feet down to the river’s oily surface.” The photograph accompanied a story about Moore’s successful dive, headlined “Diver Gives Thrill with Bridge Leap.” This photograph may be related to image No. 372A0629.
