Multnomah Guard marching on 6th Street, Portland, during War Activities parade

Photograph showing troops marching in formation past crowds of spectators on Sixth Street (now Southwest 6th Avenue) in Portland. The photograph was taken during the War Activities parade on Saturday, April 6, 1918. The parade was among events marking the issuance of the third Liberty Loan bond to finance the war effort during World War I. A cropped version of this photograph was published on the front page of the Oregon Journal city edition on Sunday, April 7, 1918. The photograph had the following caption: “The Multnomah Guard, Lieutenant Colonel John B. Hibbard commanding, made its first public appearance in War Activities parade Saturday.” The photograph accompanied a story headlined “Big Pageant Wins Cheers Of Throngs.” See related image Nos. 376G0308 and 376G0310.

These buildings are (left to right) the Steam Plant, Main Building, and School Building. The school has occupied this location since 1910. People stand on the lawn in front of the Main Building and on its front steps for the photograph. The photograph is mounted on a dark brown mat. A faded black and white photograph of a group of boys in a field. Several younger boys sit in the grass while the older ones stand behind them. Those at the left and right ends of the group are too blurry to see. A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads: "OSSD older boys circa 1917". OSSD stands for Oregon State School for the Deaf, the name of the school from 1913-1989.

Black and white photograph of the older girls' parlor at the Turner Road location of the Oregon School for the Deaf. The school occupied the Turner Road location from 1895-1910. Several older female students read in various locations throughout the room, including at a table in the center of the room. The walls are decorated with lace curtains and pennants from several different schools. Left to right: Pearl Pickett, Grace Smith, Grace Kau, Mattie McCain, Fay Newth, Ruth Thomas, unknown, Clara Hagen, unknown, Alice Litchenberger, Ruba Westfall, Lotus Valentine, and Hulda Isaacson. A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads: "Ore. School for Deaf Mutes Older Girls' parlor on Turner Rd. 1907". The Oregon School for Deaf-Mutes was the name of the school from 1880-1913.

A handwritten note below the photograph reads: "Supt. Irvin 1892-1894". A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads: "Oregon School for Deaf-Mutes 1898 on Turner Rd." The Oregon School for Deaf-Mutes was the name of the school from 1880-1913.

A black and white photograph of students and their teacher in a classroom at the Oregon School for the Deaf on Turner Road. The school occupied the Turner Road location from 1895-1910. The students sit at tables set up in a rectangle and are turned to face the camera. The photograph is mounted on a black mat and a note under the photograph reads "OSD primary classroom - 1908-09 - Turner." Faded notes on the back of the photograph identify two of the students as William and Samuel Toll. It reads: "William Toll end of 2nd row. 3rd from left 1st row Sam Toll (bro. to Wm.)" Another note on the back reads: "Oregon School for Deaf 1908-09"

A black and white photograph of the Printing Office of the Oregon School for the Deaf on Locust Street in 1916. Several boys are working at machines and in other locations in the room. One student is labeled as "Edwin". A note written on the back of the photograph reads: "Printing Office - Salem Deaf School - 1916 T. A. Lindstrom, deaf teacher" The printing class was taught by Thure Lindstrom and was located on the 2nd floor of the Steam Plant Building at this time.

Photograph showing the Rivera School in the Rivera-Dunthorpe district south of Portland. At right, an unidentified person is tending a shrub at the corner of the building. A cropped version of this photograph was one of two that were published on Page 10 of the Oregon Journal’s city edition on Saturday, April 16, 1921, under the headline “Model Grounds for Model School.” This photograph had the following caption: “Residents of Rivera-Dunthorpe district of west side spent last Saturday improving premises of Rivera school, built by residents as a community enterprise, along modern ideas of making an ideal ‘country’ school. Above—View of Rivera school building showing roofed playground.”
