Dance at the Pendleton Round-Up

A band performs for dancers during the Pendleton Round-up. A crowd can be seen gathered on a street, some of them dancing alone or with a partner. Several neon business signs can be seen at either side of the street (negative 10 of 24).

People gathered at the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River, at the start of irrigation pumping. A military band is in the foreground, with an empty cement reservoir visible in the distance. A crowd stands above a cement wall. Photographs from this series were published in the Oregon Journal on Friday, June 15, 1951 (negative 5 of 37).

A group of approximately twenty-five men pose for the camera in a horse-drawn wagon. The men hold instruments such as trumpets, french horns, and clarinets. The wagon is festooned with fir garlands. An inscription scratched into the negative reads "1980 Mt A - band."

Band at Vancouver Barracks

A band and conductor, wearing military uniforms, perform outdoors at Vancouver Barracks. The band members are seated in a semi circle, facing towards the standing conductor, who has one arm raised. A large tree and wooden buildings can be seen in the background. Likely part of the Citizens’ Military Training Camp at Vancouver Barracks (negative 19 of 24). Original sleeve title: “Vancouver Barracks.”

American Legion drum major Mutt Williamson posing with baton

Full-length portrait of American Legion drum major Mutt Williamson in the middle of a street, standing with one hand on his hip and holding a drum major’s baton in the air with the other hand. He is smiling and is wearing a hat, a long-sleeved collared shirt, breeches, and boots. A cropped version of this photograph was one of eight that were published on Page 1 of the Oregon Journal on August 8, 1929, under the headline “Legion Hosts Answer Roll-Call At Salem.” The photographs had the following caption: “Oregon’s capital city today and for the rest of the week will be in the hands of American Legionnaires meeting annual state convention.” This photograph had the following additional caption information: “Lloyd (Mutt) Williamson, drum major, Medford drum and bugle corps, winner of drum major honors at 1928 convention and out to repeat.” Also see image Nos. 371N0841, 371N0892, 371N0916, and 371N1702, which were published with this photograph, and image No. 371N0915.
