Eddie Stinson and party with plane at air show in Portland

Photograph of pilot Eddie Stinson (right) standing in a row with three men and two women next to his Stinson Detroiter monoplane at Swan Island airport in Portland. The photograph was taken on Tuesday, September 27, 1927, after the group’s arrival for an air show at Swan Island. A cropped version of this photograph was one of four, including image Nos. 371N6105 and 371N6108, that were published on Page 21 of the Oregon Journal on Wednesday, September 28, 1927. The photographs were published under the headline “Adventurers of the Air Who Thrilled Portland Today.” This photograph had the following caption: “Members of the Eddie Stinson party as they arrived at the airport; from left, A. H. Harris, Fred Koehler, Mrs. Bert Acosta, wife of the famous flier; J. T. Whitaker, Mrs. Thomas Mulroy, wife of [Richard E.] Byrd’s chief engineer, and the famous Eddie himself.” The photographs accompanied a story about air races and other events related to the show. Damaged airplanes in pile at Swan Island after windstorm

Photograph showing an overturned Student Prince airplane lying on top of a Breese monoplane, the City of Portland, at the Swan Island airport in Portland after a windstorm on the night of Wednesday, February 19, and early morning of Thursday, February 20, 1930. A cropped version of this photograph was one of two images published on Page 1 of the Oregon Journal on February 20 under the headline “The Wind’s Idea of a Good Time.” The photograph had the following caption: “The ‘bit of a blow’ which Portland had this morning, in addition to causing much hat chasing, did some actual damage. At Swan island airport it inspired a Student Prince plane to fly without a pilot, with the result shown in the top photograph—the Student Prince upside down the back of a Breese plane and the two leaning against a third ship.” The photograph accompanied an article about the storm, titled “Wind and Rain Wallop City; Poles Broken.” Also see image Nos. 371N5958, 371N5959, 371N5960, and 371N5961.

Carol Mangold loaning pilot Tex Rankin her black cat for air race

Photograph, taken on August 24, 1928, of pilot Tex Rankin (center), Carol Mangold of Portland (right), and an unidentified person, possibly Cy Larsen of the Line Material Company. They are standing next to Rankin’s airplane, the Rose O’Portland, and Rankin is holding Mangold’s pet cat, Alba Barba. Rankin borrowed the black cat to accompany him on a national air race from New York to Los Angeles. Alba Barba was one of two “jinxes” that Rankin deliberately adopted for the race; the other was to enter his plane under the number 13. On August 24, the day Rankin departed, the Oregon Journal published a Page 2 story about the pilot and the cat, titled “Rankin and His Jinxes Go East to Start Derby.” See related image Nos. 371N2073, 371N5919, 371N5920, and 371N6222. L. B. Waltz arriving in Portland by plane for medical treatment

Photograph of two unidentified men lifting L. B. Waltz of Selah, Washington, onto a stretcher from an airplane after he arrived at Rankin Field in Portland for medical treatment on March 28, 1928. That day, the Oregon Journal published a front-page story about Waltz’s flight and a related photograph, image No. 371N5966. The story, headlined “Patient Brought Here in Airplane,” reported that Waltz, a teacher, had been injured in a car wreck a week earlier and was flown from Yakima, Washington, to Portland by pilot Tex Rankin. The photograph was taken on Saturday, November 28, 1931, after Hawks flew from San Francisco for a brief stay in Portland. A cropped version of this photograph was one of three that were published on Page 3 of the Oregon Journal’s city edition on Sunday, November 29, 1931. The photographs were published under the headline “Three Hours From San Francisco.” They had the caption: “Captain Frank M. Hawks said his exact time from San Francisco to Portland Saturday was three hours and five minutes. But at that, he wasn’t trying for speed—just jogging along.” This photograph had the following additional caption information: “Three famous fliers get together (from left), Hawks, Dorothy Hester, and Tex Rankin.” The photographs accompanied the continuation of a front-page story about Hawks. Hawkins performed a christening of one of the new buses. The Oregon Journal published a short story about the ceremony, headlined “New Bus Line is Christened in Portland,” on Page 2 of its September 19, 1927 city edition. The Oregonian newspaper, which published a story on September 20, 1927, reported that after the ceremony, city council members and Southern Pacific office staff took a short ride around Portland on the new buses. Crime scene at Portland home of murder victim Simon Mish?

Photograph showing a telephone table in the corner of a room. The table and nearby wall molding are covered with what appears to be blood. A framed photograph is hanging on the wall next to the telephone. The photograph may have been taken at the Northeast Portland home of Simon Mish, age 70, who was murdered there and found dead in his yard on December 12, 1934. The wallpaper in this photograph appears to be the same as in image No. 371N3516, showing Mish’s dining room, where he was killed. John Joseph Osbourne, a Portland special police officer, was convicted of Mish’s killing.

William Edward Hickman with police during extradition to California

Photograph of William Edward Hickman (front, left), probably taken in Portland on December 25, 1927, as Los Angeles police escorted Hickman from Pendleton, Oregon, to California to face charges in the murder of 12-year-old Marion Parker. Hickman was captured by Pendleton Police Chief Tom Gurdane and state traffic officer Buck Lieuallen near Echo, Oregon, on December 22, 1927. He was subsequently extradited to California, where he was tried and convicted in early 1928 and executed that October. Hickman was captured by Pendleton Police Chief Tom Gurdane and state traffic officer Buck Lieuallen near Echo, Oregon, on December 22, 1927. A cropped and reversed version of this photograph was published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on Monday, December 26, 1927. The photograph had the caption: "Hickman's arrival at Portland jail." The photograph was published under the headline "Hickman Started On Return to Scene of Atrocious Crime," along with image Nos. 371N1116, 371N3579, and several other photographs. The photographs accompanied a story titled "Hickman in California; Calm Again." Hickman was tried and convicted in California in early 1928, and he was executed that October.
