SP&S railway yards at Cliffs, Washington

Scattered railroad cars and a locomotive stand idle on the railroad tracks in the train yard. Mountains are visible across the river in Oregon. Writing at the bottom of the print is cut off, but legible part reads, "Yards at Cliffs." Handwriting on the back reads, "Cliffs, Wa."

Machinery for Eugene sewer contract on SP&S train

Photograph of a train carrying construction machinery on flat cars to fulfill a sewer contract in Eugene, Oregon. A sign on the side of the train reads, "These ten cars are loaded with machinery to be used by James Kennedy of Fargo, North Dakota on the $500,000.00 sewer contract at Eugene, Oregone (sic)." The name "Clark" is handwritten on the bottom of the print and this photograph was likely taken by F. Melvin Clark. Handwriting on the back of the print reads, "Eugene."

Wreck of Great Northern Railway Mail Train

Photographic postcard showing a wrecked Great Northern Railway locomotive on its side, on the ground. Three men attend to the wreck on the left. A man looks at the camera on the bottom right. Handwriting on the back of the print reads, "Oct 29, 1913, Eng. BO Miller was killed in this wreck at McCall Washington. Condr Lee Braughton & Eng. SA(?) Smith of work train was out on trestel (sic) unloading gravel, trestel (sic) washing filled in ?. They were in the schedule of the mail train and had no flag out. Neil(?) Train Derailment on the Deschutes River, Maupin, Oregon

Photograph of a derailed train on the Oregon Trunk Railroad on the Deschutes River near Maupin, Oregon. One railroad car is partially submerged in the river while another hangs over the bank of the river. Several people observe the damage. This train derailed on January 31, 1954 when it hit a rock slide. Typed note on the back of the print reads, "Derailment on Oregon Trunk at M.P. 56, January 31, 1954." [The Oregonian published a story about this train accident on February 2, 1954. It features another photograph of the accident taken by George Lindsay.]

Typed note on the back of the print was likely written by Jack M. Holst. It reads, "I'm sorry I don't have a better photo of the car in question, but this may give you some idea. It is the car in front of the "British Columbia" in this photo taken on one of the Canadian trips a couple of years ago. Road: West Coast Rwy Assn. Remarks: N. Van., B.C." A stamp at the bottom reads, "Jack M. Holst, 12930 N.E. Tillamook, Portland 30, Oregon." [Jack M. Holst was the president of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.]

This train carried passengers from Portland, Oregon to Louisville, Kentucky for the Annual National Convention of the American Legion in 1929. The man wears a suit and the woman wears a fur-lined coat. They look at the camera and smile. Handwritten note on the back of the print reads, "Am. Legion Spl. train to Louisville, Sept. 25, 1929."

SP&S Diesel Electric Locomotive on Oregon Electric Railway

Photograph of a diesel electric locomotive on the Oregon Electric Railway. The train driver looks out the window. Typed note on the back of the print reads, "New SP&S Road Freight Diesel Electric Locomotive Placed in Service Oregon Electric Railway between Portland and Eugene. Each unit of the new locomotive weighs 230,000 pounds fully loaded, is 51 feet, 6 inches long between coupling knuckles and has a wheel base of 36 feet, 6 inches. It stands 14 feet, 9 inches high. It is equipped with two four-wheel trucks and four electric motors geared to the driving axles. The weight per driving axle is 57,500 pounds. The wheels are 40 inches in diameter. It carries 1200 gallons of fuel oil and 200 gallons of lubricating oil. The new 115 ton, 1500 horsepower units can be operated in multiples to deliver, 1500, 3000, or 4500 horsepower, depending upon the power desired for a given run."
