Biographical information for Warren N. Vaughn

A form printed by the Oregon Historical Society and filled out by Warren N. Vaughn detailing his family history and information about his journey from Michigan to Oregon in 1849. The information was collected by the society to include in a register of pioneers to Oregon.

"Early History of Tillamook," volume 4

The fourth volume of Warren N. Vaughn's four-volume manuscript, "Early History of Tillamook." In this volume, Vaughn writes about the establishment of the first sawmill in Tillamook County. He recounts two local legends: the story of the "beeswax ship," a ship carrying candle wax that had wrecked on the Tillamook shore, and the story of a buried treasure. He also tells the story of prospectors who discovered gold in the area. Vaughn shares that by 1862, commerce and trade had developed considerably and the community of white settlers in Tillamook County continued to grow and prosper. His narrative ends abruptly with the story of one resident murdering another.

"Early History of Tillamook," volume 3

The third volume of Warren N. Vaughn's four-volume manuscript, "Early History of Tillamook." In this volume, Vaughn continues his description from Volume 2 of the community effort to construct a schooner, which was completed and launched on its maiden voyage to Astoria and Portland to purchase supplies. Vaughn also writes of negotiations between the U.S. government and the Tillamook people, with the government intending to execute a treaty with the Tillamook for their land; however, proper negotiations never took place and Vaughn asserts that the Tillamook had their land unlawfully taken away. Vaughn also describes a series of violent conflicts that occurred between the Native people and the white population, which resulted in ongoing tensions. He writes of the growth of the white population in Tillamook through 1860 and increased trade, mainly by sea.

"Early History of Tillamook," volume 2

The second volume of Warren N. Vaughn's four-volume manuscript, "Early History of Tillamook." In this volume, Vaughn writes of the hardships he and other early white homesteaders endured, including lack of provisions and supplies and isolation from the outside world, as they established their homes in the Tillamook Bay area. With construction of a new trail between Tillamook and the Willamette Valley, an influx of immigrants relocated to the area and Tillamook County was officially organized in 1853. Vaughn describes early steps taken to establish a community, including the creation of a public school and a blacksmith shop, and efforts to build a schooner to facilitate trade. He describes the first election and the first census taken of Tillamook County, both in 1854, and lists the names of all 80 white residents at that time.

The first volume of Warren N. Vaughn's four-volume manuscript, "Early History of Tillamook." In this volume, Vaughn recounts how he first heard of Tillamook in 1851 while living in Dayton in Yamhill County. After deciding to relocate there, he made multiple journeys between Dayton and the Tillamook Bay area starting in 1852 and ending in 1853 when he took up residence on a claim in Tillamook. Vaughn details his travels during this period and the difficulties faced in attempting to reach Tillamook from Dayton. He writes about his experiences with his travel companions during these trips and describes encounters with the Native peoples of the area, who often acted as guides and provided assistance, food, and supplies for the immigrants during their journeys. While Vaughn's retelling of these interactions is generally positive, he also uses language that was common at the time and includes disparaging or pejorative descriptions of Native peoples.

Typescript transcript of "Early History of Tillamook"

A typed transcript copy of all four volumes of Warren N. Vaughn's "Early History of Tillamook," copied and edited by Louise W. Goodrich for the Columbia Gorge chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonist. Vaughn was one of the early white settlers of Tillamook County and recorded his detailed recollections of the community and events in the Tillamook Bay area from 1851 to approximately 1863. The narrative recounts the journeys that Vaughn and fellow settlers made between Yamhill County and Tillamook Bay, the establishment and growth of Tillamook County, and interactions with the Native people of the area.

Urban League of Portland News Roundup, October 1961

The first page of the Urban League of Portland News Roundup newsletter, dated October 1961, announcing Dr. Martin Luther King’s visit to Portland on November 8, 1961, invited people to attend his speech at the Civic Auditorium (now the Keller) and to make a small donation to pay for his travel expenses. King was invited by the Urban League to participate in the Annual Equal Opportunity Day, which is still held every year.

“Innocent Fun or Social Shame?”

The Urban League of Portland provided this explanation against staging minstrel shows and blackface in schools. It was published in the Oregon Education Journal, c.1950. Edwin “Bill” Berry, who would later become the Executive Director of the Chicago Urban League, included a note addressing the teachers and principals who were “deeply hurt when the matter is discussed with them.” The goal of the essay, Berry wrote, was to educate as many teachers as possible so that the League’s “efforts will be preventative rather than remedial.”

Oral history interview with Edwin J. Peterson [Transcript]

Transcript. This oral history interview with Edwin J. Peterson was conducted by Jeffrey C. Dobbins in Salem, Oregon, from August 21 to December 11, 2007, as part of the United States District Court of Oregon Oral History Project. The interview was conducted in thirteen sessions. Throughout the interview, Peterson refers to photographs and letters. Copies of some, but not all, of these items are included in the related U.S. District Court of Oregon Historical Society collection, Coll 560.

In the first interview session, conducted on August 21, 2007, Peterson discusses his family background in Gilmanton, Wisconsin, including the local creamery managed by his father; his childhood activities; and his early education. He also talks about his memories of rural life during World War II.

In the second interview session, conducted on August 28, 2007, Peterson continues to discuss his early life in Gilmanton, and his memories of life during World War II. He then discusses having asthma and moving to Oregon in 1944 in an effort to improve his health. He looks at photographs of his home and family in Gilmanton and discusses them.

In the third interview session, conducted on September 4, 2007, Peterson discusses his high school experience in Eugene, Oregon. He talks about studying music at the University of Oregon, including his social life and his summer activities.

In the fourth interview session, conducted on September 11, 2007, Peterson continues to discuss his college experiences at the University of Oregon, including his involvement with the Young Republicans. He describes his service as a personnel officer in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, particularly his experience in administration. He shares his memories of the Cold War.

In the fifth interview session, conducted on September 18, 2007, Peterson discusses attending the University of Oregon Law School. He talks about the dean, Orlando Hollis; his social life; and his summer jobs. He talks about relocating to Portland to practice law at Tooze, Kerr, Peterson, Marshall & Shenker.

In the sixth interview session, conducted on September 25, 2007, Peterson discusses practicing law in Portland. He speaks at length about cases he tried, about fellow lawyers, and about judges he argued before. He particularly focuses on trial preparation and procedures.

In the seventh interview session, conducted on October 9, 2007, Peterson speaks further about University of Oregon Law School Dean Orlando Hollis, then continues to discuss practicing law in Portland. He also talks about his involvement with the Oregon State Bar, and his friendship with Clay Myers.

In the eighth interview session, conducted on October 16, 2007, Peterson continues to discuss practicing law in Portland. He reflects on his career as a lawyer, talks about cases he worked on, and discusses settling out of court. He shares an anecdote about his appointment to the Oregon Supreme Court in 1979.

In the ninth interview session, conducted on October 23, 2007, Peterson discusses the procedures of the Multnomah County Circuit Court and the Oregon Court of Appeals, and talks about judges who served on those courts. He also shows the interviewer, Jeffrey Dobbins, his collection of photographs and speaks about them at length.

In the tenth interview session, conducted on October 30, 2007, Peterson continues to discuss his photograph collection. He then speaks about his service as a justice on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1979 to 1993. He describes his fellow justices on the court. He discusses the procedures of the Supreme Court, cases he heard, and his re-election in 1980.

In the eleventh interview session, conducted on November 6, 2007, Peterson continues to discuss his service as a justice on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1979 to 1993. He talks about serving as chief justice from 1983 to 1991, including implementing an integrated court system, the court's budget, and the court's staff. He reads entries from his journals detailing this part of his career.

In the twelfth interview session, conducted on November 13, 2007, Peterson continues to discuss his service as a justice on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1979 to 1993, and serving as chief justice from 1983 to 1991. He talks about implementing the uniform trial court rules. He also discusses the changes in technology, rules of professionalism, and diversity training. He reads additional entries from his journals detailing this part of his career.

In the thirteenth and final interview session, conducted on December 11, 2007, Peterson closes the interview by talking about his activities since retiring in 1993, including teaching at the Willamette University Law School and working as a mediator.

Land Program Recreational Project, Columbia Gorge - report

A twelve-page report authored by John B. Yeon, chairman of the Pacific Northwest Regional Planning Commission's Columbia Gorge Committee, written to Mr. Lawrence Merriam, regional officer for the National Park Service's State Park Division, on the subject of a proposed interstate park in the Columbia River Gorge along both sides of the Columbia River. In the report, Yeon requests the support of the National Park Service in purchasing non-agricultural land to establish the park. Yeon describes five specific areas in the Gorge where the proposed land would be purchased: Cape Horn, Beacon Rock, White Salmon, Latourell, and Crown Point.

A letter written by regional forester C. J. Buck to Marshall N. Dana, district chairman of the National Resources Board. Buck expresses the support of the Forest Service for a proposed interstate park in the Columbia River Gorge. He states that negotiations have already been made to add certain Multnomah County lands to the National Forest.

Two letters addressed to Marshall N. Dana, District Chairman of the National Resources Board, regarding a proposed interstate park in the Columbia River Gorge. The first letter is from A. S. Burrier, land planning consultant for the state of Oregon, in which Burrier suggests extending the proposed land purchase areas to include all of the privately owned lands from Crown Point to Cascade Locks. The second letter is from regional land planning consultant Harold H. Henry, who also recommends expanding the area of purchased land to include the area west of Prindle and the Wauna Lake region in Washington. Included with the second letter is an extract from a report that supports the creation of the Gorge project

A series of four letters regarding a proposed interstate park in the Columbia River Gorge. In the first letter, John B. Yeon recommends to the Oregon State Planning Board that the board endorse the purchase of certain lands for the project. In the second letter, the board's executive secretary writes to Oregon Governor Charles H. Martin of the board's endorsement of the purchase of the land. In the third letter, Governor Martin writes to the regional director of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration to recommend that the A.A.A. pursue the purchase of the land. The fourth letter is a response from the A.A.A. regional director to Governor Martin, advising that proposal for the purchase of the lands should be filed with Lawrence Merriam of the National Park Service.

A statement of support for a proposed interstate park in the Columbia River Gorge, provided by the Washington State Planning Council. The first page contains an introduction written by Executive Officer R. K. Tiffany, which states that the council has passed a resolution regarding the project and that the council would consider the Columbia Gorge Committee's preliminary report once it was completed. The second page contains the text of the resolution endorsing the project.
