Full-length portrait of (from left) Portland Mayor George L. Baker, composer Charles Wakefield Cadman, and Rose Festival association president Frank C. Riggs standing outside Union Station in Portland on January 20, 1927. The photograph was taken after Cadman’s arrival in Portland on a trip to plan that year’s Rose Festival pageant, of which he served as director general. Baker and Riggs greeted him at the station. That day, the Oregon Journal published a story about Cadman’s arrival, headlined “Composer Here to Work on Rose Festival Music,” along with two photos, on Page 18. The photograph may have been taken on Thursday, June 11, 1942, when the Rose Festival court visited patients at Shriners Hospital in Portland. The princess and the girl are both unidentified. The number 3 is written on the negative and is visible in the lower left corner of the image. The Oregon Journal published two other photos of the Rose Festival court’s visit to the hospital on Friday, June 12, 1942.

1944 Portland Rose Festival court at selection ceremony

Photograph showing the 1944 Portland Rose Festival queen, Jo Anne Bush (center) surrounded by her court at the selection ceremony on May 27, 1944. The ceremony was held at the Portland Public Auditorium (now the Keller Auditorium). A cropped and reversed version of this photograph and image No. 375A0280 were published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on May 28, 1944. A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 2 of the Oregon Journal on June 5, 1932, under the headline “New Festival Queen and Her Royal Princesses.” The photograph had the following caption: “Queen Frances Kanzler, Washington high school senior, and her seven high school princes [sic] who will rule over Portland’s annual fiesta of the rose, June 16-17-18, in their royal robes. Procession of Portland Rose Festival court

Photograph of a Royal Rosarian in a suit and cape escorting a woman into a park as spectators look on. She is wearing a gown and carrying a large bouquet. Behind them is a group of women who are also wearing gowns and carrying bouquets. This photograph was likely taken at the Portland Rose Festival on June 10, 1929, as festival queen Lenore Tamiesie (probably the woman at the front of the procession) and her court arrived at Laurelhurst Park for the queen’s crowning.

Portland Rose Festival Float with large ski jump structure

Photograph showing a flower adorned float at the 1951 Portland Rose Festival at Multnomah Stadium, with the large wooden ski jump structure in the background (at 155 feet high, the structure was built to celebrate the upcoming 1952 Oslo Winter Olympic Games).
