Diesel Electric Locomotives

Typed note on the back of the print reads, "This fleet of 4,000 horsepower diesel-electric locomotives will pull Great Northern's streamlined Empire Builder on a daily 45-hour schedule between Chicago, the Twin Cities and the Pacific Northwest. The power units already have been delivered to Great Northern. Construction of the five 12-car all-accomodation trains is under way with delivery scheduled for the last quarter of 1946, barring construction delays. Portland Zoo Railway Station at the 1959 Oregon Centennial Exposition

Photograph of the Portland Zoo Railway station at the 1959 Oregon Centennial Exposition grounds in North Portland. Today, this is the site of the Portland Expo Center. A sign on top the building reads "Oregon Railroads" and there are smaller signs for Spokane, Portland & Seattle Ry., Northern Pacific Railway, Union Pacific Railroad and other rail lines. A small portion of the Zooliner train is visible on the left. The Oregon state flag flies above the building.

Deck of the S.S. Great Northern

Photograph looking down a covered deck of the S.S. Great Northern. A lifeboat sits on the roof of the deck. This ship was built by the Great Northern Pacific Steam Ship Company for the SP&S Railway. It served to transport passengers and freight between terminals in Astoria, Oregon and San Francisco, California.
