The photograph had the following caption: “One of the several examinations given in the eugenics tests made at the Parents’ Educational bureau, 551 courthouse, every Wednesday. The tests are for mental and physical defects and advice is given for their correction.”

Japanese Americans in detention center at Pacific International Livestock Exposition building

Nurse Alice Nakaro holding Cordon Kondo at a detention center for Japanese Americans at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition building in Portland. Next to her is door with a “No Admittance” sign attached to it. After Executive Order 9066, the building served as a temporary detention center for Japanese Americans, From May through September of 1942, awaiting eventual transfer to more permanent incarceration centers.
