Cooley residence, Silverton, Oregon

View of two homes on a residential street. The house on the right is partially obscured by foliage. Climbing roses grow around the wide pillar of its front porch. This is identified as the home of Rholin and Pauline Cooley. Rholin and Pauline Cooley started Cooley's Gardens in 1928. They specialized in iris hybridization and mail order business. The two-story house on the left has three dormer windows on its gable roof and a small front entrance with columns and a pediment. This home is identified as Otto Legard's residence.

Dr. Rudolph Kleinsorge's house, 419 E. Main Street, Silverton, Oregon

Faraway side view of a two-and-a-half home surrounded by tall trees and a landscaped side yard. Dr. Rudolph Kleinsorge was a physician who is still well-known for his iris hybridization. He created the first true brown iris bloom, "Tobacco Road." He is credited for inspiring the Cooleys to start growing irises and was often featured in Cooley's Gardens catalogs. The house was built in 1916.

Two mature fruit trees are close to the front gate. A young woman is seen in the doorway to the left of the trees. Samuel Benedict was a non-Indigenous settler killed in the conflicts of 1877. His widow Isabella Benedict nee Kelly went on to marry Edward Robie in 1880 and lived at a ranch on the Salmon River just north of John Day Creek.

Eva Coolidge's house, 301 W Main St, Silverton, Oregon

Exterior view of a two-and-a-half story American Foursquare-style home. A large covered porch with square columns and pediment. A large dormer on the third floor. A large landscaped lawn with mature trees. Eva Coolidge built this home in 1913. After her father, Ai Coolidge, died in 1908, she became president of Coolidge and McClaine Bank. The home was purchased in 1920 by Myron C. Woodard, founder and president of the Silver Falls Timber Company.

Benson was a pheasant farmer in Silverton from 1914 to 1937. The pheasants he raised were shipped all over the country.
