Agriculture and animals

Photographs related to agriculture, horticulture, and animals from approximately 1920 - 1945. The bulk of the photographs depict people, animals, and scenes at fairs and livestock shows, probably the Multnomah County Fair in Gresham, Oregon, and the Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland, Oregon. Other images depict topics such as cats, dogs, wild birds, poultry, and Tusko the elephant; farms and farmland; flowers, flower shows, and gardens.

A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 2 of the Oregon Journal on May 5, 1931, under the headline “To Brighten Sick Rooms.” The photograph had the following caption: “Mrs. F. Louis Stoeckle and an armful of the blooms which the Plant, Fruit and Flower Guild is taking from the recent flower show in Laurelhurst park for distribution to hospitals. The flowers were part of the exhibits. They are going first to charity hospitals, then to the others.”

Prize-winning tulips, 1931 Portland Flower and Garden Show

Text is partially visible on the ribbon; it reads: “Prize / Portland Flower and Garden Show / 1931.” This photograph, along with image No. 371N3453, was published on Page 1 of the Oregon Journal on May 3, 1931. The photographs were published under the headline “At the Garden Show in Laurelhurst.” This photograph had the following caption information: “White tulips in a royal blue porcelain vase are something to conjure with, visitors at the garden show learn.” The photographs accompanied a story about the Portland Flower and Garden Show titled: “Beauty Marks Garden Show Held by Club.” The show was put on by the Portland Garden Club and the Portland parks bureau.
