Half-length portrait of Charles M. Schwab, director general of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, taken in Portland on Saturday, July 13, 1918. A cropped version of this photograph was published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on Sunday, July 14, 1918, under the headline “Head of Emergency Fleet Corporation.” The photograph had the following caption: “Charles M. Schwab, director general of the Emergency Fleet corporation, who is a Portland visitor. Mr. Schwab’s rise in the industrial world from a humble beginning to the recognized position of the ablest steel man forms one of the greatest dramas of American business.
