Memorial monument to Captain James and Sarah Blakely

A stone obelisk monument in memory of Captain James Blakely (alternately spelled Blakley) and his wife, Sarah Dick Blakely, probably located in Brownsville, Oregon. Blakely was one of the founders of Brownsville. A plaque on the monument reads, "In Memory of James and Sarah Dick Blakley." Engraving on the base reads, "Capt. James Blakley 1812-1913 / Sarah Dick His Wife 1815-1888 / Natives of Knox Co. Tenn / Settled Here in 1846."

A note written on a print from this negative reads, "A 'Dutch Flopper'. - windmill built in 1867 by John Sayers to pump water from a shallow well for his livestock The mill has been running continuously for 66 years and has worn out four pitcher mouth pumps, and is still going strong. The mill is 4 miles south of Brownsville, Or, on the Cascade Highway J. D. Drake"
