Barge launching at Zidell Ship Wreckers in Portland

A steel barge being launched at the Zidell Ship Wreckers yard in Portland, after being rebuilt for the Portland Gravel Company. The barge is splashing into the Willamette River, with a view north, looking towards the the Hawthorn Bridge. The top of the Steel Bridge can also be seen. Portland Rose Festival boat parade

A water regatta for the 1953 Portland Rose festival. A line of boats travels on the Willamette River, towards the Hawthorne Bridge. At the left side of the frame is a ship, the “Pacific Lady,” docked on the east side of the river. Cattle truck fire and round-up of scattered cows in Portland

Cattle be rounded up after a collision between a truck carrying 17 heads of cattle and an empty gasoline truck on S.W. Harbor Drive in Portland. Several men approach the cattle with lassos, who appear to be grazing on grass in front of the Hawthorne Bridge and South Naito Parkway. A story detailing the accident was published in the Oregon Journal on Friday, July 30, 1954 (negative 8 of 8).

Hawthorne Bridge ramp construction barriers

The Hawthorne bridge during construction of new access ramps on the bridge's west end. The far lane of the roadway has been removed and there is a steep drop-off to the ground below. A wooden picket barrier separates motorists driving on the remaining lanes from the edge of the construction area. This photograph was published in the Oregon Journal on July 2, 1958 with an article about citizens concerns about the safety of the barriers at the construction site (negative 4 of 4).

Negatives documenting company activities, including electrical infrastructure, employees, power generation and distribution throughout Portland, the Willamette Valley and the Oregon Cascade Range. Additional general images include streetcars and trains, street lighting, power line installation, Rose Festival floats, office buildings, car barns and bridges. Of particular note are dam building projects at Bull Run and along the Clackamas River (1910-1930), and early electric stations in Oregon City at Willamette Falls.
