History

Frank Anthony Bauman Jr. was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1921. He grew up in Northeast Portland and attended Grant High School and later Stanford University (1939-1942). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy's Japanese language intelligence program and visited Hiroshima with U.S. forces directly after the war. From 1946 to 1949, he attended law school at Yale University, specializing in international law. He returned to Oregon in 1949 and practiced law with a number of Portland firms, including Veatch, Bauman & Veatch and Keane, Haessler, Bauman & Harper. He and Mildred Packer were married in 1950, and Bauman then studied international law at the University of London. From 1971 to 1976, he was the United Nations senior officer to Australasia. He was active in the World Affairs Council and served with the Aspen Institute in Japan. He died in 2015.
