A cropped version of this photograph was one of three that were published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on October 15, 1935, under the headline “The Garner Whiskers Come Off.” This photograph had the following caption: Vice President John Nance Garner in the barber’s chair at the Union station Monday night. A barber stands in front of the damaged glass windows of a shop after an explosion destroyed the basement and first floor of the U.S. National Bank at S.E. Grand Avenue and S.E Alder Street in Portland. Cracks can be seen extending through the glass, as a group of women stand outside. Photographs from this series were published in the Oregon Journal on Wednesday, March 21, 1951 (negative 10 of 17).
