Scope and content
Photograph showing 1942 Portland Rose Festival Queen Shirley Fowler standing arm in arm with an unidentified man on a dirt path under a trellis covered with roses. She is wearing her tiara and holding a scepter. Visible behind Fowler and the unidentified man are some of the Rose Festival princesses. At left is Janet Newman, and behind her is Leona Kunce. The photograph may have been taken on June 12, 1942, when the festival court visited the Lambert Gardens in Portland. The Oregon Journal published a story about the court’s visit to the gardens on Saturday, June 13, 1942. The number 3 is written on the negative and is faintly visible in the lower left corner of the image.
